National Union of Igede Students (NUIS) has called on the president of the Federal republic of Nigeria to act fast over the long sustained killing of Igede People in Ukpute, Oju local government area of Benue State by the Tiv Militias. NUIS Calls on President Buhari over the Incessant Killing of Igede People in Ukpute.
Recall that the Bonta People of Tiv land have been waged several attacks on the Ukpute People of Oju local government area, killing numbers, which led to the deployment of military men to the region. The whole world of course heard how the men of the Nigerian Army were killed and burnt to ashes. Unfortunately, the attacks have rather been amplifying as they recently burnt over 50 houses in Igede land and killed numbers of Igede people.
The statement which was signed by the NUIS National president, Comr. Ebonyi Mathew and the Director Media and Publicity, Comr.Ufana Peter Ojeka and made available to igedeonline.com reads:
“NATIONAL UNION OF IGEDE STUDENTS (NUIS) NATIONAL SECRETARIAT; CALLS ON PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI(GCFR) OVER SUSTAINED UNGODLY ATTACKS ON UKPUTE COMMUNITY OF OJU LOCAL GOVERNMENT, BENUE STATE BY BONTA MILLITAS.
“Mr. President, it’s dawn on us to draw your attention to a sustained ungodly attack on Ukpute community which as of yesterday 20th July escalated to Ochoro Upaa and Ekingo communities in Oju local government leading to burnts of over 50 houses by Bonta millitas of Konshisha local government, Benue State. His Excellency, it will interest you to know that Ukpute community is a subset of Ainu Ette, who are predominantly Igede speaking tribe has since 22nd June, 2020 being subjected to incessant attacks which leads to annexation of our land , killings, maiming and destruction of houses and properties by the Bonta/Tiv people of Konshisha LGA against the people of Ukpute Community in Oju LGA, Benue State. Since then, the killings and annexation of Igede land by the Tivs in that area continued unabated.

“Again, unprovoked hostilities started on 3rd March, 2021 when Bonta millitas launched an unexpected attack on our people right on their farmland killing many and inflicting varying degrees of injuries on others. This incident was reported to the Police right from the DPO, Oju up to the Commissioner of Police in Benue State by which, the representative of the commissioner of Police in the State visited the scene to ascertain the information on ground. This was on 7th March,2021.After a short breifing and eyesore witness assured the perpetrators would be brought to book and promised to return soon to put an end to the matter in due time.
“We were expecting the Commissioner of Police to come to our aid the Bonta millitas in their usual ways strucked again on 8th March, 2021 an caused great havoc on us.
“As the attacks go on, only a little attention was paid to the matter by the state government under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Ortom which led to the settings of peace committee headed by the state deputy Govenor, Engr Benson Abounu with no visible move and the boundary remains undemocrated given the go ahead for millitas to ambush us.
“Mr President may please note that, this was same attacks which leads to the killing of 12 soldiers in Konshisha sometimes on 6th April,2021. We are forced to believe that our oppressors have construed the Governor’s body language to mean an approval to deal with us.
“Coursty of the above and other unknown, the Oju-Awarji road connecting the Igedes to state headquarters has since then being closed while many flew their home. This refugees are camped somewhere under trees and uncompleted houses at the nearby community. The students are not left out of the pains as they can’t go back to their parents neither was they home for them anymore. The peace loving Igedes has used every opportunity at her disposal but to no avail hereby calling on the Commander-in-Chief of the Arm forces of the federation for help.
“Efforts by some traditional rulers, student unions, youth groups and other individuals of good will from the Igedes have failed to stop the onslaught. It is in light of the foregoing that we appeal to Mr. President to use your good office to as matter of urgency deploy Soldiers to stop the killings as well as bringing in the service of Federal Boundary Demarcations Agency’s to restore normalcy to the warring zone.
