The Proverb in Igede language ?
Ukuchwu ole ko ju kepwu ny’uje ny’ogbiji, owa ogbiji akaa chi le
English translation of the proverb ?
It is the hand that enters a vipers den that the viper will sting.
Igede Proverbs teach moral lessons and they inculcate wisdom to the listeners. This particular one is saying that, no one can be punished for a crime he/she knows nothing about. Instead of saying that directly, a viper and a human being is rather used to illustrate it.
Example
Mr Ajiga: Chief Ode’s son stole a goat from the neighboring village and they threatened to arrest Chief the father.
Mr Ogbaji: Ooliyeti? Ukuchwu ole ko ju kepwu ny’uje ny’ogbiji, owa ogbiji akaa chi le. Onghohie aw’iChief koo!
Mr Ajiga’s response says: “what is the reason? It is the hand that enters the vipers den/hole that the viper stings. Nobody should arrest Chief. Use the comment section to give your reviews, observations and contributions. See you in the next edition.
